Commercial equine liability insurance coverage is very important if you perform any commercial equestrian activities such as boarding horses, riding instruction, horse training, breeding, horse sales, etc. This type of equestrian liability insurance is provided if you are sued by a third party who is injured or whose property is damaged (excluding horses: see Care, Custody, or Control liability). The equine liability insurance policy covers defense fees and pays claims for which you are legally liable up to the policy limits.

Below see the details on some additional types of Equine Liability and Property Coverages.

Care Custody & Control

Consider this equestrian liability insurance coverage if you board, train, or breed horses for others. Standard General Equine Liability insurance policies exclude coverage for personal property (such as non-owned horses) in your Care, Custody, or Control. This void in your equestrian liability coverage can be filled by Care, Custody and Control coverage if one of those non-owned horses is injured or dies while in your care and you are found negligent. The Care, Custody, and Control policy will provide for the medical care or replacement cost of the horse up to the policy limits.

Riding or Hunt Club Liability Insurance

This type of equestrian liability insurance policy is designed to provide liability coverage for equine member organizations and their public event days. Public event days are those activities in which non-members participate, or to which the general public is invited. Please contact one of our offices for a quote.

Horse Show & Event Liability Insurance

Equestrian liability insurance coverage is available for individual horse shows, clinics or equestrian events. Coverage is provided for the actual event days declared and includes days for a certain number of both setup and takedown.

Completed applications should be received in our office a minimum ten (10) days prior to the event.

Therapeutic Riding Program Liability Insurance

Marshall & Sterling/Equisport offers an EXCLUSIVE equestrian liability insurance policy designed by our staff and the underwriters. This special policy offers a comprehensive $1,000,000 coverage that includes the following:

  • Provides liability coverage for programs regardless of the number of volunteers, riders, instructors and number of horses utilized.

  • Can include able-bodied instruction for an additional premium.

  • We have carriers that can provide coverage for PATH International-model programs and EAGALA-model programs.

Please note that most of the equine insurance companies we work with cannot add coverage, such as Worker’s Compensation or Medical Coverage for your staff, instructors or volunteers, to this type of policy.

Individual Horse Owner Liability Insurance

Horse owners are faced with unique liability exposures that may not be adequately covered under normal personal liability policies, such as a homeowner’s policy. Our carriers have specifically designed an equine liability insurance policy to cover the horse owner's legal liability for both bodily injury and property damage to others resulting from horse ownership. Individual owners of personal horses or show horses who do not derive income nor are involved commercially are usually eligible.

Race Horse Owner Liability Insurance

Many people own race horses as an investment or simply as an enjoyable hobby. The forms of ownership are many, including, but not limited to, individuals, partnerships, corporations, etc. These owners face unique liability exposures for injury or damage resulting from the ownership of race horses. As a business exposure, this liability is normally excluded under any personal homeowner insurance the owner(s) may have.

The equine insurance companies we work with provide a Race Horse Owner's Liability Insurance Policy (RHOL) for racing stock owners that are not directly involved in breeding horses, training horses, or racing horses, but contract with independent contractors. Certificates of insurance should always be obtained from these independent contractors.

Should a person be injured or property damaged as a result of your horse's racing activities, our carriers will, subject to policy exclusions, defend you in court and pay claims for which you are legally liable. Policy limits are available up to $5,000,000.

Horse Farm & Ranch Insurance

Equestrian facilities represent singular risks that require specific liability insurance coverages. Our carriers provide a package policy specifically designed for horse farm and ranch operations, from small pleasure horse farms to multi-location commercial horse farms. Our insurance package allows you to insure the following items under one policy:

  • Your home and/or employee tenant dwellings

  • All dwelling contents owned by you

  • All farm structures, including barns, arenas, run-in sheds, hay barns, workshops and other farm related buildings

  • Farm vehicles and trailers

  • All farm machinery and tools/equipment such as tractors, mowers, blades, saws, drills and bush hogs

  • Tack and related horse equipment

  • Specifically scheduled items such as jewelry, furs, guns, fine arts and stamp collections. You can also schedule computers and home entertainment systems.
