The premium rate is based on the horse’s use, breed and age.

With certain horse insurance companies, an Equine Mortality Insurance policy also includes at no extra charge (providing the horse meets the policy requirements):

  • Automatic Colic Surgery Coverage

Medical Assistance, Veterinary Services, Colic and Surgical Endorsements

You can add a type of equine medical insurance to your Equine Mortality policy to help with the cost of covered health issues. For example, with the Medical Assistance or Veterinary Services endorsements (the name for these types of equine health insurance varies depending on the company), coverage can include medical and surgical procedures performed by a veterinarian, including a portion of the diagnostic expenses, as a result of a covered accident, illness or disease. These horse health insurance types of endorsements can include coverage for medical treatment, surgical services, as well as after-care treatment. Deductibles are reasonable and benefits are generous.

Other more limited horse health insurance coverages include Colic or Surgical endorsements, which only cover for specific circumstances, such as certain surgical procedures, or colic. Most clients prefer the more comprehensive Medical Assistance or Veterinary Services coverages, but sometimes due to cost or eligibility they will choose the Colic or Surgical endorsements to help protect their horses.

Loss of Use

If your performance horse (12 years and under) becomes totally and permanently incapable of fulfilling the functions for which it is used, as stated on your equine insurance policy, but its condition does not necessitate destruction for humane reasons, you may suffer a financial loss. Full Equine Mortality and Medical/Surgical insurance coverages are required in order for Loss of Use coverage to be added. If your horse sustains a covered accident, sickness or injury, and it is a covered loss of use claim, the equine insurance company will pay out a percentage of the horse’s insured value.
